A letter from Artistic
Director Sean Graney:
As we opened our
sophomore decade of producing theater, it is hard to ask for a
better start.
Desire Under the
Elms was named Critic’s Choice by the Chicago Reader and Hedy
Weiss called it “a lip-smackingly good production.” Featuring over a
ton of mulch and performances by some of Chicago’s finest, the show
garnered praise from press and audience alike.
In November, we
traveled to New York City with, The 4th Graders
Present an Unnamed Love-Suicide for the GoChicago! Festival at
59E59Theatres. Representing the storefront theater community, we
shared the stage with Chicago greats Steppenwolf and Writers’
Theatre.
It was an honor to
travel in the company of such respected theaters. And it became even
more an honor when The New York Times likened our production to
“Harold Pinter as a 9 year-old” and called it “stirringly
melodramatic.”
New York audiences
discovered something that Chicago audiences already knew - The
Hypocrites produce a different kind of theater.
It is your support that has
helped us accomplish all of this. Your gift of $25, $50, or any
other amount goes directly to supporting the artistic product of The

I am eager to introduce
you to the next production of our 11th Season, Miss
Julie by August Strindberg. When the company chose plays for our
Season of Classics, I knew without a doubt that Strindberg’s pivotal
work had to be included.
Miss Julie
launched modern drama, evolving into the performance style commonly
used across the country. With The Hypocrites’ adapted production of
Miss Julie, we are continuing our belief of challenging the
shape of traditional theater and its role in our modern society.
I believe that theater
must evolve to remain relevant. As the top theater town in the
country, Chicago is the best place for us to create our new work –
revisioning theater.
I founded The
Hypocrites 11 seasons ago to create a different style of theater,
one that stands as a unique and honest voice to the Chicago and
national theatrical landscape.
Thank you for joining
us as we continue to make theater.
Sincerely,
Sean Graney
Artistic Director
