Our mission - which is ever-evolving to adapt to the growth of our organization - is to make a Theater of Honesty. We define a Theater of Honesty chiefly through two elements of our work: performance and presentation. In performance, our actors shall employ a genuine emotional vulnerability, rather than manufacturing a disconnected, intellectual version of emotion. In presentation, we shall acknowledge our presence in a theater and embrace high theatricality. Through this balance of an unyielding emotional honesty and accepting a concept of "play," we seek to strengthen the connection between artist and audience, enriching our audience's imaginative experience. Ultimately, we aim, perhaps somewhat naively, to spread understanding within society, thereby minimizing cruelty.
Theater is art. Do not be afraid. Do not feel stupid. People who make theater are artists. The audiences who see theater are engaging in art. The Hypocrites is an organization designed to create theater as a form of artistic expression. Artistic impulses cannot really be classified, so from show to show, and year to year, the focus of our art will shift.
CONTRACT WITH ARTISTS: Leave no aspect of humanity uninvestigated. Let no aspect of theater escape your judgment. Create exciting, inspiring art.
CONTRACT WITH AUDIENCE: Be responsible for your time in the theater. Engage yourself with the art.
REASON NOT TO EXPERIENCE THE HYPOCRITES: Art/theater seems pretentious, condescending or boring.
REASON TO EXPERIENCE THE HYPOCRITES: You want to be challenged into opening your self to new experiences and new ways of engaging with art, society, and your self.
So in closing, do not be afraid, do not feel stupid. The Hypocrites won’t kill you or steal your babies. We will make theater. We will make art.
Thank you for reading, and considering The Hypocrites, we know your time is valuable.
